About RTEI
The Right to Education Index (RTEI) is a global accountability initiative that aims to ensure that all people, no matter where they live, can enjoy their right to a quality education. A project of RESULTS Educational Fund, RTEI works with civil society, research institutions, and governments to drive accountability and progress towards the right to education in countries all over the world.
RTEI is a global index built out of the international right to education framework to track national progress towards its fulfillment. The Index consists of indicators explicitly derived from international human rights treaties and conventions, including:
- The Universal Declaration of Human Rights,
- The International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights,
- The Convention on the Rights of the Child,
- And many more.
RTEI monitors the extent to which governments are meeting their obligations around the right to education, seeking to answer such questions as:
- Is the right to education guaranteed by the constitution?
- Is there a policy for free education? Have school fees been abolished?
- Are there enough classrooms, textbooks, and trained teachers?
- Is corporal punishment illegal?
- Does the law protect pregnant girls from being expelled?
- Are schools meeting the needs of children with disabilities?
- Is education available in a child’s mother tongue?
- Are private schools subject to the same standards as public schools?
RTEI reveals key areas in need of improvement and can be used by citizens, civil society, researchers, and governments to explore issues more deeply and place efforts where they are needed most.
