Adult Education and Lifelong Learning in the Asia South Pacific (ASPBAE) and E-Net Philippines Orientation Workshop in Promoting Gender Equality and Children’s Rights
ASPBAE – Adult Education and Lifelong Learning in the Asia South Pacific and E-Net Philippines conducted an Orientation Workshop in Promoting Gender Equality and Children’s Rights last September 9-10, 2023 held at Botolan, Zambales. It was attended by the Lubos na Alyansa ng mga Katutubong Ayta sa Sambales (LAKAS) youth, an indigenous peoples (IP) organization. This workshop provided an opportunity for learning, sharing and exchange of ideas to address issues in the community regarding gender and education.
The discussion on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) highlighted the ‘3 Ps’: the right to Provision, Protection, and Participation. Meanwhile, the genderbread person was used to discuss the diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions and sex characteristics (SOGIESC). The difference between ‘sex’ and ‘gender’ was explained. Through the ‘Power and Privilege’ walk activity, the intersectionality, gender equality, and its significance in education were explored based on the actual experiences and perspectives of the IP youth participants.
At the end of the orientation, LAKAS youth participants identified the educational issues they are facing especially in relation to their social identities. In addition, they generated recommendations and action plans to be implemented within the LAKAS community such as conducting an orientation workshop for LAKAS elders and establishing a school organization for people of diverse SOGIESC.
